An annular solar eclipse will be visible in Bellingham this Saturday, Oct. 14 from 8 to 11 a.m. In an annular eclipse, the moon appears slightly smaller than the sun, leaving a thin ring of sunlight visible around the moon’s shadow. The Whatcom Association of Celestial Observers is hosting a free event at Zuanich Point Park for people to come view this rare solar occurrence.

On Tuesday, August 1, Whatcom County voters filed their ballots to be counted in the Whatcom County 2023 Primary Election. The two candidates with the most votes will both appear on the November election ballot. Each mayoral term is four years. As results roll in for the competitive mayoral race, with incumbent mayor Seth Fleetwood and challenger Kim Lund taking early leads, take a look back at candidates’ visions for the city and their goals as mayor.

For more than 12 years, the Lake Whatcom Triathlon has brought together athletes from all over Whatcom County for a fun and safe competition. The triathlon consists of multiple distances, the two most popular being the Olympic and sprint distances. Each distance consists of three sections: swimming, biking and running. The other races include two relays where each of the three sections is divided between different athletes, and the aquabike, where athletes only complete the swimming and biking portion of the race. This triathlon brings together people of different ages, genders and athletic abilities. Bloedel Donovan Park, the west side of Lake Whatcom, is filled with music, food and people celebrating this event together.

JJ’s Junction, located on Douglas Avenue next to JJ’s In and Out Food Mart, was forced to make the decision to finish the house’s five-year venue run due to financial and housing difficulties.
