Today's recipe: rice porridge from the Studio Ghibli movie classic "Kiki’s Delivery Service". Lately, I’ve been seeing a very popular site passed around that shows Studio Ghibli fans how to recreate their favorite meals from the movies. Skeptical about the skill level required, I searched for the most simple recipe I could find to recreate. Browsing online, I found a recipe for the rice porridge made in "Kiki’s Delivery Service" that looked fairly simple and easy. Here’s my take on this recipe: I noticed that almost all the ingredients appear to be pure staples typically found in pantries. I already had everything I needed, except for the chicken tenderloin.

Here's what you'll need: Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1/2 cup rice
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 50 grams (1.8 ounces) chicken tenderloin
  • Salt (to taste)
Not only are the ingredients simple, but the directions are as well!     Directions
Step 1: First thing, wash the rice. I suggest about five rinses.

Step 2: Place the washed rice in the cooker and press. Cook the white rice. Mix the chicken and meat together after the rice is cooked. If you want to cook in a pan, you can cook the rice on low until it bubbles. Step 3: If you cooked the rice in a cooker, place the cooked rice in a medium sauce pan. If the rice is still in the pan, add the chicken in after the rice starts bubbling. Step 4: Remember to cover and stir occasionally while waiting for your food to boil. Step 5: Mix in the milk and then cook for three to four more minutes. Step 6: Add salt to taste. After about six minutes of cooking with the rice and chicken together, I took the porridge off the pan and gave myself a serving! The only ingredient I had to buy for this recipe, was the chicken tenderloin which was $6.43 at a local Haggen. All of the other ingredients were available at my friend’s place. All of the ingredients can be purchased for a little over $13, however these ingredients are basic staples that people typically use over time. TIP: I noticed when working with this rice porridge, you should expect to put in a lot of salt for taste! I also added pepper as well. The great thing about this recipe, is that you don’t have to go out of your way to purchase the items.  After eating this meal, I now feel that I have a closer connection to one of my favorite Studio Ghibli classics.
