I’m probably one of the few people who has never been a huge fan of fried food, and even when I did eat meat, it was fairly easy to pass up a piece of fried chicken. Sometimes I want to have a meal that isn’t super healthy, and this fried tofu recipe is an example. If you usually find that tofu is boring or don’t know how to cook it, you’ll enjoy this really simple recipe. You’ll need:

  • 1 package of tofu
  • Krusteaz bake and fry mix
  • Olive or vegetable oil
  • Optional: dipping sauce, like Sriracha or BBQ
Step 1: Remove the tofu from the package. It will be full of water, so pour that out and use paper towels to absorb some of the water. Cut into bite size pieces.   Step 2: In a mixing bowl, pour in a half cup of the bake and fry mix. On the back of the box it may say to use water or eggs, but you don’t need to do this with tofu since it is already pretty moist.

Step 3: Put the tofu pieces in the bowl with the bake and fry mix and stir around so that all of the tofu pieces are coated evenly. Step 4: Use a large fry pan or a wok and fill it with oil. You’ll want to use quite a bit so that the tofu is submerged in the oil. Heat the pan to medium-high or high. Step 5: Once the oil is hot, carefully place tofu pieces in the pan. You may have to cook it in two separate batches if there isn’t enough room for all the tofu to fit in the pan. Cook and stir periodically until it begins to get brown and looks crispy, probably around 15 minutes. Step 6: You may want to use a slotted spoon to remove the tofu and put it on a plate covered with a paper towel to absorb all the oil. You can eat it plain or grab a sauce to dip it in, enjoy. This is a great alternative to frying chicken, and you don’t need that many ingredients. My parents both enjoy it, so it's even meat-lover approved.
