N’Nato Camara demonstrates a new move for her students at Presence Studio on Sunday, Feb. 21. The style of dance she taught is called Sofa and comes from the Malinke people in Guinea, West Africa. Sofa is a dance that is meant to give good luck and celebrate the hunters before they set out, Camara said. The class was taught with all live music from Naby Camara and Lamile Soumah (not pictured) as well as many other local artists. Soumah taught the drum class just before N’Nato’s dance class. The style of drumming they played is called Soko, Soumah said. It is played for the farmers to give them strength and energy to do their work. // Photo Ian Koppe
