Initial inspections began in June around the Sehome neighborhood, and about 42 percent of rental units failed safety codes upon first inspection. Code violations can include broken locks, exposed wiring, leaking plumbing or missing handles on appliances.

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Western! Like many of you I also am new to this wonderful university and to Bellingham, having just started my official duties as president on Aug. 1. My wife Uzma and I have enjoyed learning our way around campus and our new hometown, meeting new people, and learning firsthand what makes Western and Bellingham such a special place to live and learn.
The ninth annual Get Your Blue On BBQ kicked off with new President Sabah Randhawa barbecuing hot dogs and burgers with chef Patrick Durgan. The event, normally in the PAC Plaza, took place in the lawn in front of Old Main on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Retired associate professor Thomas J. “TJ” Olney died in an accident while paragliding above Blanchard mountain on Wednesday, June 13. Olney’s chute collapsed, which lead to his crash. Olney was 64 years old and had retired from teaching marketing this past June, Western Communications Director Paul Cocke said.
Western psychology professor Dr. Joseph Trimble has been announced as the recipient of the 2015-2016 Diversity Achievement Award, alongside Dr. Trula Nicholas of the Woodring College of Education. They will receive their award at the Welcoming Convocation service which opens the 2016-2017 school year.
Paul Burke, a 2014 Western graduate, recently launched a new roommate-finder application. After the debut of the beta version, it took less than three weeks for the application to reach 1,000 downloads.
