Viking Voices showcases student opinions on different issues by asking them different questions.
How do you think gender equality should be addressed in science, math, engineering and technology professions and classes?
“I think that both genders should be encouraged equally to participate and women should be given groups to get together because men just already have that community to themselves. Women should be supported there."
“I don’t know what it looks like right now because I’m not in that field, but I know from what I’ve heard, it’s really difficult to have women in those classes. I think that you should not be given special privileges based on your gender. It should not be assumed that you are better or less than another person based on your gender.”
“I think that a lot of is creating safe environments in classrooms for students of all identities just because I know a lot of folks don’t feel safe especially in STEM classrooms because of that lack of equity and lack of respect that a lot of female-identified folks and non-binary folks receive.”
“The way I see it is two options. One, you could have at the beginning of class a questionnaire with “What are your preferred pronouns?” Or you could implement a policy where there’s just no pronouns allowed.”
