By Sydney Clanton   The Western Men’s basketball team earned a 91-65 win over Montana State University Billings on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Sam Carver Gymnasium.   The 6-foot-7 sophomore guard Trevor Jasinsky had a hot hand and led the Vikings (18-6, 13-3 GNAC) to an easy victory over the Yellowjackets with a career-high 23 points. Jasinsky’s previous single game high was also against MSU Billings (12-14, 4-11 GNAC) during the 2016-17 season. “Credits to my teammates. They were finding me and giving me good looks. I don’t think it’s necessarily something that Billings does, it’s just that today my teammates were able to find me. All credits to them and the coaching staff,” Jasinsky said.

Jasinsky struggled in the first half of the season trying to find his rhythm as a shooter, but he knew tonight he would be able to show out for the Vikings. Jasinsky was shot 3-7 from the three-point line, finishing the first half with 15 points. “As a shooter, when a couple go at the beginning, you know it’s going to be one of those nights. I knew it after a couple of shots,” Jasinsky said. Western head coach Tony Dominguez was proud to witness Jasinsky’s hard work paying off on the court after setting his career-high for the second time against MSU Billings. “He’s a really hard worker who shot it really well,” Dominguez said. “He’s put a lot of time into making sure he’s doing the right things, as far as technique and mechanics, so I’m proud of him.” Jasinsky wasn’t the only player to reach double digits against the Yellowjackets. Senior forward Deandre Dickson had 15 points, two assists and seven rebounds. The Vikings also had three other players reach double digits against MSUB.

The Vikings’ offense, however, wasn’t what got them the win tonight. The team’s defense was what really stood out tonight as the Vikings’ outscored the Yellowjackets by 26 points. “The first half we were playing really, really good defense and we were knocking our shots down. But how we got the win really started on the defensive end,” Dickson said. Western brought intense defensive energy into the gym, allowing them to maintain their lead over MSUB for the entire game. The game was tied for only 37 seconds. “We had a great defensive outing today. We kind of came together and it feels like we are definitely back on the right track now,” Jasinsky said. In the first half, Western was able to hold MSUB to only 20 points, opposed to the Vikings 45 points. Western shot 57.9 percent from the field overall while the Yellowjackets struggled to make a shot, shooting only 39.7 percent from the field. “We are definitely feeling confident headed into our next game versus Anchorage, we are really starting to figure out our defense as a team,” Jasinsky said. Dominguez plans to give the Western men’s basketball team the weekend off before practicing again on Monday in preparation for their next match up. The Vikings will face off against Alaska Anchorage at home at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15.
