A 20-year-old Western student was struck by a car while crossing Bill McDonald Parkway near campus the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 23, a Bellingham Police Department spokesperson confirmed. While the officer on scene did not know how severe the student's leg injury was, the victim was alert and talking at the hospital, Bellingham Police Department Lt. Danette Beckley said. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, on Bill McDonald Parkway near Birnam Wood. The student was southbound in the crosswalk and almost to the sidewalk when they were hit by a compact car traveling downhill, Beckley said. A 59-year-old driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to obey a pedestrian control device, Beckley said. The Bellingham Police Department has not released names of the victim or driver. This post will be updated if further information becomes available.
