Club Cup creates campus competition

The Associated Students will be holding a year-long competition for the campus clubs, called the Club Cup.

The Club Cup is a competition for all AS clubs to accomplish tasks that benefit their club. At the beginning of the year the clubs are given a list of tasks on the AS website. Each task is worth a certain amount of points. All the tasks are beneficial to the club. Some tasks can only be done once per year — such as 10 points for creating a website or 15 points for registering the club for the info fair. Some tasks can be completed once per quarter, such as 5 points for using the Outdoor Center as a group. At the end of the year the club with the highest amount of points wins a 5-foot-tall silver trophy with the club’s name on it. Associated Students Club coordinator Walter Lutsch said the Club Cup started as an attempt to bring clubs together. “We have over 200 clubs on campus and we wanted a way to bring them together through friendly competition,” Lutsch said. “With these tasks we hope to help highlight some resources that clubs have access to but don’t know about.” Currently in the lead with 40 points is the SwingKids. The SwingKids is ran by president, Bailey McCully. McCully is a senior at Western and an English and theater major. She has been the president since the beginning of the year. The club has been established for 21 years, McCully said.

The SwingKids is a social dance club. Every meeting has a beginner lesson, an intermediate lesson and then they all dance for an hour and a half, McCully said. The club is not limited to people who have a background in dance. “Most people haven’t done any kind of dancing before they come take social dancing,” McCully said. The SwingKids have been working with other clubs and putting on performances in order to help boost its score in the Club Cup, McCully said. The SwingKids meet every Wednesday from 7-9:30 p.m. in the Viking Union Multi-Purpose Room and are always open to new members, said McCully. The Club Cup is something that Lutsch thinks will continue for years to come. “We hope for it to be a tradition that carries on for years,” Lutsch said. “We hope students in the future will see the very first trophy awarded to the best club of the year in the first ever Club Cup.”
