The Western women’s softball team won both of their games and scored a total of 15 runs in a doubleheader against Simon Fraser University on Wednesday, April 8.
In the first game, the Vikings won 9-3. Junior Alexie Levin racked up four RBIs in multiple ways. Levin hit a sacrifice fly, walked in a run with the bases loaded and hit a home run later in the game.
Three other players collected two more hits. Senior shortstop Alicia Fine was on base often, going 3-4. Sophomore Kali Patterson went 2-4 and knocked in two RBIs adding to the 9-3 lead. Junior Jordan Walley also contributed to the nine runs by hitting a two run home run.
“I think yesterday was just our day to finally bust loose,” Levin said.
Freshman Makinlee Sellevold started the game for Western, and registered her 16th win of the season. She pitched five innings and gave up one earned run.
After the first game, the Vikings played their second game of the evening and won 6-1. Senior Autumn Isaacson batted leadoff for the Vikings and went 3-4 and scored three runs, while stealing four bases.
Fine knocked in another two RBIs in the second game, while Patterson also continued her strong plate presence by going 2-4. Freshman Emily Benson went 3-4 and senior Allie Crowe hit a solo home run.
Sellevold started again and got the win after pitching three innings while holding Simon Fraser to zero runs. Sophomore Shayna Adelstein came in for relief and pitched four innings while giving up one earned run.
“I feel like everyone came together yesterday ready to win,” Levin said. “This is the point in the season where we’re ready to prove what we can do.”
Levin said some team members struggled earlier this season. It stemmed from team chemistry and some of the team adjusting from high school softball to college softball.
“We have gone through a lot of growth as a team,” Levin said. “We had a lot of young girls who had to adjust.”
The Vikings are now 21-15 and 10-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. They have two doubleheaders this next weekend at home against Western Oregon University and conference-leading Saint Martin’s University.
Western is currently in second place and will be looking to gain ground on Saint Martin’s this weekend.
“We want to prove that we deserve to be at the top of the GNAC,” Levin said. “We have so much talent this year and I think we finally have it all together.”
