The Western men’s lacrosse club trounced Saint Mary’s College with a final score of 23-7 on Wednesday, April 1, at home.
The win comes after two losses on the road to Concordia University and California State University Fullerton.
Western scored early in the first quarter and put three more goals in before the end of the first quarter.
Saint Mary’s struggled to gain possession of the ball and did not score until the second quarter.
“On the defensive side we just dominated,” head coach Adam Lent said. “It’s fun to watch them play.”
Much of Saint Mary’s struggle for possession came from face-offs, which Western took possession from nearly every time.
Western played with a great deal more structure and passing accuracy. However, as Western gained a comfortable lead in the second half, they gave Saint Mary’s room to put more points on the board.
“We got a little over excited,” senior club president Colin Story said. “But overall it was a good game.”
Still, Saint Mary’s couldn’t defend against Western’s relentless offensive and blinding speed.
Senior Skyler Bridgman felt his teammates showed why they’re still the best in the Pacific Northwest.
“I liked the amount of energy we had out on the field,” Bridgman said. “Our passes looked better. Our defense was solid.”
Lent and Story both said the team needs to continue focusing on unselfish play.
“There were a lot times where one guy tries to do it all himself and run through several defenders and it doesn’t work out,” Story said.
Zach Fritz leads the team in points, tallying two goals and seven assists in the contest.
The Western men’s lacrosse club is the defending champion of the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League and has already set the national tournament firmly in its crosshairs.
The team’s next game is against the University of Puget Sound on Sunday, April 5. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Wade King Student Recreation Turf Field. UPS is currently 2-3 on the season.
