Thousands affected by power outage in Bellingham

By Sara Bourgeau and Atticus Everett Over 4,000 customers were without power in the Samish Hill and Sehome neighborhoods for an undetermined amount of time, including all of Sehome Village, on Monday, July 30. It was reported on the Puget Sound Energy website that about 4,397 customers on Samish Hill were out of power as of 7:09 p.m. By 10:48 p.m., power had been restored to all customers on Samish Hill, with seven customers still impacted in Sehome, according to the PSE outage map. The cause of the outage is listed as an equipment failure. The PSE outage line had a recorded message that said, “This is an outage update as of Monday, July 30, as of 7:28 p.m. We are aware of power outages in Bellingham and damages assessors have been dispatched to determine the extent of the damage.” Sehome Village Haggen was without power for about an hour and 40 minutes, starting at 5:50 p.m, according to the person who answered the phone at Haggen. Emergency lighting was activated when the lights went out. Haggen helped the customers who were already in the store and prevented new customers from entering until power was restored at around 7:30 p.m.   *This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
