By Alex Halverson A man wielding a knife was shot and killed by a Bellingham Police Officer on Sunday afternoon. The subject was shot after stabbing someone in the throat on the 100 block of Holly Street, according to the Bellingham Police Department. The subject ran toward Magnolia Street and was shot by the officer at around 4:20 p.m., police said. Police said the subject “advanced on” the officer and would not listen to commands to stop. No other officer fired, police said. Firsthand-witness Matthew Schaffer saw the subject stab the person outside of the Horseshoe Cafe and run on foot toward Magnolia Street. “We literally walked into the whole thing, and once the cops got there he lunged at them and they shot him,” Schaffer said. The stabbing-victim was taken to a hospital. The status of the victim is unknown at this time, police said. There has been no info released on the relationship between the subject and the victim. The shooting was done by a standard issue firearm, police said. The officer was wearing a body cam. The officer has been placed on administrative leave following standard protocol, police said. No further information on the officer is being released tonight, police said. We will be updating this story as we receive more information.
