Switchfoot captivates Bellingham at Mount Baker Theater

California Christian rockers Switchfoot dared the crowd to move in a sold out performance at the Mount Baker Theater Sunday, May 29.

Lead singer Jon Foreman anchored the group with his energy. He was never shy to venture down into the mosh pit, request help from fans singing along or jump off the elevated stage.

At one point in the show, Foreman noticed a sign in the crowd requesting them to play their 2014 hit “Let it Out” and told the rest of the band that they would gladly take requests before counting off “Let it Out.”

The concert was kicked off by Bellingham native Kris Orlowski, whose acoustic indie music captivated the crowd. Orlowski told the audience that this concert was especially meaningful for him, having been born and raised in Bellingham through college. Additionally, Seattle-based Christian-rock group The Exchange helped open the show.

Once the concert ended, the party didn’t stop. It isn’t unusual to find the band having an acoustic jam session outside the venue after the curtain call, and Sunday was no exception. Frontman Jon Foreman headed to Boulevard Park, where he played a handful of acoustic songs to a crowd of a few dozen people.

There were a lot of Canadians who had made the trip across the border for the concert. Ahead of the opening the doors to the venue, dozens of fans lined up around the block to get first dibs on their place in the crowd.

Switchfoot fan Cailee Zimiler was seeing the band for her eighth time and made the trip across the border to see them this time.

“I like their words,” she said. “I like that they stand for something.”

Brothers Jaron and Rafe Stanage are big Switchfoot fans, but Sunday night provided the first opportunity to see them live, Rafe said.

“I have been a fan since I was 10 or 11, and I have never gotten to see them live,” Rafe said. “It’s good chance to see them in my hometown, which is exciting.”

The band has been busy touring throughout the United States and Canada to promote their the release of their tenth studio album, “Where the Light Shines Through,” which drops July 8, 2016.
