Get to know Western

Western junior Christian Castro.

With each entry of Get to Know Western, The Western Front will interview students and staff for a new insight on campus life. This week, we interviewed junior Christian Castro.

Q: Why did you pick Western?
A: I toured Western during my senior year in the fall, they had a Western Preview, and I just really liked it. I liked the atmosphere, and how it wasn’t in the middle of the city like UW. I also liked the beautiful bay over there and the brick and all the art sculptures around campus. It really appealed to me and it was the first school to accept me.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Western?
A: The openness of the people, the general vibe from people is open and welcoming and you can literally go up to a stranger and ask to talk.

Q: What is your major?
A: Plastics and Composites Engineering.

Q: How did you get interested in your major?
A: I knew I wanted to do engineering in High School, I just really liked math and science and physics. When I came here, I explored the major a little bit and I saw what they do in the labs and I decided I want to do that.

Q: What do they make in the labs?
A: In one of my classes we made a throwing batman star made out of plastics. I also made a longboard out of fiberglass last quarter.

Q: What has been your favorite class so far?
A: Introduction to Composite Materials, last quarter, the class where I made the longboard, that was really fun. The lecture was really boring but when you actually get to apply what you know, and you go work with your hands, I think that’s pretty sweet.

Q: What do you like to do in Bellingham?
A: I like to go hiking and I like to kayak. I love kayaking, I don’t do it very often, but I like to go out to Lakewood and it’s great that they have the three dollar deal where I can go kayak all day.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for students?
A: Enjoy life and live life, focus on your studies but don’t put your identity in your grades. These four years, or however long you spend in college, are pretty transforming years.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: I like to longboard, I just picked that up this quarter. I like to play Frisbee with friends, play guitar and go to the gym to lift weights.

Q: What are you doing on the Comm Lawn?
A: I was meeting up with my friend, I am a part of Campus Christian Fellowship, and I am one of the small group leaders. What I do is meet up with a few of the guys every week and we do a bible study, we catch up on life and have a meaningful conversation.

Q: What do you normally talk about?
A: Ways we can improve and be better Christians. Not in a sense of being religious, but having a better relationship with God. We also talk about how we can be a better witness, so as Christians, we are representatives of Christianity to people who are not Christians. We make sure we are not hypocritical and that we are real, and being authentic in our relationships.
