Guest Column I have been Western's President for 14 years and find that Western offers new experiences every year. As a Western student you'll view people, places and phenomenon from a different perspective. You will discover a community, form relationships and skills and experience many activities and ideas for the first time.

Fourty dollars for a concert and a black eye

As far as epic battles go, this one was pretty one-sided.

In one corner was the beloved hero - me: 17-years-old, 5 feet 5 inches, 125 pounds, a simple childlike mind and a pair of blue eyes you can get lost in.

In the other corner was a sweaty, heaving mass of bio-matter in T-shirts and torn blue jeans.

AS student leaders work to improve Western community

Blaring rock concerts, signs in red square, a student's voice floating through the speakers to his or her own music and trips to watch Mariner's games sound like random acts of various students, but these are organized outings. The body responsible for such programs is Western Associated Students, also known as the AS - one of Western's many acronyms students learn to know and love.

Attendance fees fund student programs

Each quarter students are charged tuition and fees for attendance at Western. As implied by the description of the charges, tuition costs are paying for the classes students take. But, the 'fees' item on the invoice is more vague and often not fully understood.

Campus police maintain safety despite shooting threats

Ever since the tragedy that occurred at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute on April 16, most Western students are wondering what steps campus security has taken to make campus safer.

When a shooting threat hit campus during finals week of spring quarter, students and faculty had a chance to see those tactics in action, witnessing a school that has been on top of such emergency actions before Virginia Tech.

Waterfront property redevelopment may include Western

The Port of Bellingham and the City of Bellingham are pushing toward the completion of a long-term redevelopment project that may involve expanding Western's campus to the waterfront.

The redevelopment plans include a proposal to relocate Western's Huxley College of the Environment.

Western continues expansion

As classes resume, many students new to Western may notice the construction occurring on south campus. The Academic Instructional Center is slated to become the latest addition to Western's campus once it is complete.

Construction on the facility began February 2007 and continue until fall 2008.

Red Square Myths

The question of the history behind the name "Red Square" seems too obvious to ask.

"I always thought it was because of the red bricks," Special Collections Manager Tamara Belts said.

In reality, the tale of Red Square's name goes back more than 80 years and involves communists, white supremacists, free-love and, of course, red bricks.

Life can be tough for Western students who are under 21 and want to see as many musical acts they can. An unfortunate side effect of not being able to get into a bar is students often miss musical events. This is one reason why Ferndale natives Ryan Spiker, 24, and Mark Harrell, 21, decided to open an all-ages venue in Bellingham.

There's more to Western than hippies

If no one has done so yet, let us be the first to welcome you to Bellingham. Let us also begin by answering a common question asked by most new students: yes, there are a lot of hippies here. So get used to dread locks, bare feet and tie-dyed shirts because those free spirits aren't going anywhere.

Intramural and club sports available to all students

Recreation center offers benefits to students

The Wade King Student Recreation Center has offered students a place to hangout and get into shape since it opened in 2003, with an aquatic center, cardio area, weight room, climbing wall and indoor track.

The Student Recreation Center's (SRC) Membership Manager Bob Hofstetter said students should try and make the SRC a part of their daily schedule.
