‘Germination’ features student art at VU Gallery
By Jacob Carver
Student art was the focus of attention at “Germination,” an exhibit in the Viking Union, on Thursday, Oct. 26. The exhibit featured seniors in the Bachelor of Fine Arts field.
With over 100 people people attending the opening night, the seniors got to show off the beginnings of what this year has in store for them.
Josephene Butcher, AS VU Gallery Director, was excited to see the new work from the seniors.
“This is really their emergence into the art world,” Butcher said.
Instead of having a centralized theme, “Germination” is more of a showcase for the different routes the artists intend to take throughout the year.
The artists involved were grateful for the opportunity to show their work, but also give reference to the progress they’ll have made by their end-of-year show in the Western Gallery.
Natalie Millsap, one of the artists featured, had her sights set on the process.
“So, this is the beginning, where we’re coming from. And then over the year, we’ll be experimenting and really building up our body of work to be put in the Western Gallery for the final showing,” Millsap said.
Robyn Roberts, another featured artist, was eager to start experimenting with her preferred medium of ceramics.
“I’ve only done ceramics for a year, so I have a lot to learn,” Roberts said.
Student observers at the exhibit enjoyed what the artists offered. Western senior Noah Gray was also looking forward to the Western Gallery show at the end of the year.
“I’m very excited just seeing some of the larger pieces develop,” Gray said. “That’s always one of the highlights of the BFA shows.”
One of the artists, Marcus Waterman, created a larger piece and has been thinking about developing it . He plans to go as big as he can. He wants to take the viewer into a full experience.
“I’m hoping, personally, to get an opportunity to create an actual immersion space,” Waterman said. “An entire three-wall patterning, lighting, textures, mirrors.”
“Germination” runs from Oct. 24 to Nov. 10.
