House fire on Jersey St. spreads to a neighboring home
The Bellingham Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1017 Jersey St., which spread to a neighboring home on the morning of Oct. 5, fire inspector Greg Sluys said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Sluys said.
T.J. Joo, a Western student and resident of the home that caught fire, was not in the house when the fire started.
Joo said that his older brother was working in the backyard that morning, but by the time he noticed the flames, the house was engulfed.
As fire crews packed up their equipment to leave, residents of the neighborhood gathered to view the damage. Two people embraced in front of a neighboring home, which was scorched by the flames as well.
Kenya Sky lives down the street from where the fire occurred. She was across town in Sehome Village when she noticed that the area was covered in smoke.
Ryan Schluter, another Western student and resident of 1017 Jersey St., said that the residents of home would be staying with friends for the time being.
