The Associated Students Productions team is gearing up for their fifth annual end-of-the-year concert event; Lawnstock.

Equipped with nine artists, three food trucks, lawn games and more, the AS is ready to get the party started Saturday, June 3, from 4 to 10 p.m.

Headlining the event is YUNA, a female vocal artist named Yunalis Mat Zara’ai from Malaysia, who has collaborated with musical influences such as Usher and Pharrell Williams. Also in the band line-up is ParisAlexa, an 18-year-old singer from Redmond who has performed around Seattle. SOL, a solo hip-hop artist is based out of Seattle.

This year’s line-up is heavily focused on female artists, Makenna Schumacher, AS Productions director, said. She said it’s exciting to get out in Western’s community and promote diversity.

“It’s great to be the office that brings everyone together and makes it so that students feel welcome on campus,” Schumacher said.

She said students want something at the end of the year to celebrate.

[It’s] a celebration of all the work students have done throughout the year and a celebration of the music community that we have locally.”

Five of the nine bands are female, including, YUNA, ParisAlexa, Guayaba, DoNormaal and Taylar Elizza Beth. The remaining four include SOL, Dre’zy & Too Smoove, DJ R-Squared, who is opening the event, and Breakside, who got their spot by winning the Battle of the Bands competition mid-April.

Breakside performed and competed against 10 other artists vying for a spot at Lawnstock.

Jonah Falk, AS Productions pop music coordinator, said the event is a great time for students to de-stress.

“[It’s] a celebration of all the work students have done throughout the year and a celebration of the music community that we have locally,” he said.

Falk said he had a large learning experience when he realized how sexist the music industry could be and taking a hard look at the portrayal of women in music. The AS Production planners really wanted to push for female headliners and female representation throughout the line-up, he said.

The event will include a variety of games, such as giant Jenga, a badminton net, ladder ball, an inflatable slide and life-size Hungry, Hungry Hippos. For those who attend, the AS Production crew will be giving away free hats with a stand-alone flamingo on the front and “Lawnstock” written on the back.

Three local food carts will queue up for the festivities, including Pizza’zza and Delicious Mischief, a Cajun-style food truck, both from Fairhaven. The popsicle truck, Paleteria la flor de Michoacan, from Lynden, will be providing sweets for the crowd.
