Meet the Candidate: Ana Ramirez

Ana Ramirez

Running for vice president for governmental affairs

Studying law, diversity and justice through Fairhaven
Why do you want to run for the AS? “I love politics, I have been committed to fighting for the need of students, especially students of color.” “I’m undocumented, [which] means I’m not a U.S. citizen, so that means I cannot vote...  I’m not going to let being undocumented stop me from running.”   What does it mean to you in this current political climate being undocumented?
“At first I was really scared and I honestly wanted to drop out. But now I feel now more now than ever, it’s definitely the time to start fighting, to start fighting back. We deserve to be here and I deserve to at least try to go for this position.” “I definitely want to work for the need of undocumented students...  I would be the first undocumented AS board member. I would also be the first woman of color in this position. Like ever. Which is super intense.” What does that mean to you? “I’m not even in the position, but the fact that it would be a possibility makes me feel proud. It kind of makes me sad there has never been a woman of color in this position before. But I feel it would be a good opportunity to represent my community and other communities as well.” What are some issues you want to tackle? “Definitely student success are some of my priorities. Fulling funding the State Need Grant [Program] is definitely one of my priorities... The  State Need Grant is really important to me personally too since it’s the only financial aid I can get.”   “I’d like to see things currently in the Student Success [and Achievement] package expanded a little to benefit students of color more...  I would definitely work more with the Ethnic Student Center, I feel like that doesn't really happen, currently.” What are your qualifications? “I feel really passionate about politics and governmental affairs...  I went to Western Lobby Day, ESC Lobby Day, State Need Grants Lobby Day and Local Lobby Day...  I’m on the Legislative Affairs Council.” “I’ve written a testimony for a house bill before. I’ve done a lot of work with governmental officials with Blue Group. So I have experience doing this kind of stuff and I love doing it.”
