Water ski team making waves

As the icy grip of winter slowly fades away and spring begins to take hold, Western’s water skiing team is excited to get back on the water and do what they love. “We have a strong team this year, and it’s a lot younger than we have had in the past years. We have a strong freshman class and a couple of strong sophomores too,” team president Joe McIntyre said. The Viking water skiing team got their season started April 8 in Sacramento, California, where a strong showing landed the team with a second place finish out of eight schools. Western placed first in the slalom and jump competitions, but finished behind San Diego State University in the overall point totals.

“It’s so much fun. We are like one big family. We hang out all the time outside of water skiing, and everyone just loves each other.”

The skiing team currently has 15 members, but they are in a recruitment search for students to join them out on the lake. “We have been doing a little recruiting on campus,” McIntyre said. “[We are] looking for people who have an interest in waterskiing.” Vice president Sami Miller said no previous skiing experience is required. Whether you have previously tried skiing or have never skied before, all they want are people who are passionate about learning, and being a part of the team. “It’s so much fun. We are like one big family,” Miller said. “We hang out all the time outside of water skiing, and everyone just loves each other.” McIntyre and Miller said if you have an interest in joining the skiing team, to contact one of them or any member of the team. “It’s exciting to see a lot of people showing interest in the sport and have a team that's growing,” McIntyre said. The women's skiing team displayed dominance and was led by senior Jaye Morris. Morris finished first in the slalom, jump and trick events. Arizona State University and Washington State University are some of the schools among the country the team competes with. The team's next event takes place Saturday, April 22, in Barstow, California, and will be hosted by the University of California Los Angeles.
