Women’s Track and Field

Western women’s team shines in California invitational.

Top performances:

Senior thrower Bethany Drake won the javelin competition with a personal best 49.48 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on April 14. Drake’s throw ranked second-best in NCAA Division II this season.

Senior Jasmine McMullin won the triple jump competition with a jump of 12.27 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational, which is second all-time in Western’s history for the women’s triple jump.

Freshman sprinter Macie Allen ran a personal best 100 meter time of 12.38 seconds at the Beach Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on April 15.

Western’s next invitational is Saturday, April 22, at the Spike Arlt Invitational at Central Washington University.

Men’s Track and Field

Western men’s team competes in California.

Top performances:

Sophomore Alex Berry threw a career best javelin throw of 62.30 meters, which gave him a fifth place finish at the Beach Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on April 14.

Senior Cody McCranie ran a personal record of 3:53.17 in the men’s 1500 meter race at the Bryan Clay Invitational. It was the seventh-best time in Western men’s program history.

Junior Brandon Pless finished 29th in the shotput with a throw of 15.64 meters at the Beach Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on April 15.

Western’s next invitational is Saturday, April 22, at the Spike Arlt Invitational at Central Washington University.

Both track teams will be hosting the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational at Civic Field on Saturday, April 29.

Softball

The women’s softball team won both doubleheader games it played during the week. The games were makeups for ones canceled earlier in the season due to rain.

Western’s softball team played a doubleheader against Simon Fraser University on April 13. The first game Western won 7-4 and the second game 7-2.

Overall record: 20-15, 9-7 in GNAC play.

Ranking: Third in GNAC

Next games: On Friday April 21, the Vikings play Western Oregon University at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Viking Field. The two teams play again the next day at noon and 2 p.m. They also play Concordia University in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m at Viking Field. These games will be six of the eight final home games of the regular season.

Junior first baseman Emily Benson is hitting .457. Benson’s batting average is on pace to break Western’s softball single season record for batting average, which is .432.

Women’s Rowing

The Western women's rowing team continues to dominate as the number one team in NCAA Division II.

Last race: Western won five of eight races at the 2017 Collegiate Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake in Oregon, on April 15.

Next race: Western will try to repeat at the Western Collegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30, in Gold River, California.

Western has won 14 out of its last 17 races.

Men's Soccer

The Western men's soccer team fell to semi-pro Bellingham United April 14 at Harrington Field.

The Vikings are currently in the middle of their spring season. All games during this season are exhibition games.

Next game: Western will play Seattle University on Saturday, April 22 in Seattle. They will also play Whatcom Community College that day.

Men's Baseball

The Western baseball team continued their season with a three-game series against the University of Washington.

The Vikings played the Huskies in a doubleheader April 15-16.

Western left Seattle with a series win, taking two out of the three games in the series.

Record: 10-2 overall

Women's club volleyball

The women's club volleyball team traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to compete in the national tournament.

The Vikings placed fifth overall in the gold bracket for Division II.

The tournament took place April 13-15.

Women's Golf

The women's golf team finished fifth out of 19 teams at the Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona April 10-11.

Next: Both the men and women's golf teams will be participating in the GNAC Championships in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on Monday and Tuesday, April 24-25.
