Western track and field volunteer Tanner Boyd was arrested and booked into Whatcom County Jail for third degree theft and residential burglary. Boyd was charged with the same crime two years ago on Nov. 29, 2014. According to Western’s Director of Communications Paul Cocke, volunteers who perform security sensitive duties are required to have criminal conviction verification, but the verification was not required in this situation. Boyd was involved with the women's track and cross country teams, helping them get sixth place at the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championships. His responsibilities as a volunteer coach included recruiting athletes, assisting workouts and communicating with current team members daily. Boyd graduated from Western in 2015 with a degree in kinesiology and psychology. He was team captain and raced for both cross country and track and field teams for multiple seasons. “Since his arrest Western has barred him from Western’s campus and ended his volunteering with the track team. He is not a current student,” Cocke said in a statement regarding the event.
