Western Wellness: Gym Jams

The worst thing that can happen at the gym? No. Headphones.
Okay, maybe it’s not the worst thing. But take a trip to the Wade King Student Recreation Center and you’re bound to see students jamming out to their music. Whether focusing in or tuning out, music is a go-to workout necessity, and science agrees. “In biological terms, melodious sounds help encourage the release of dopamine in the reward area of the brain, as would eating a delicacy, looking at something appealing or smelling a pleasant aroma,” said Dr. Amit Sood a physician of integrative medicine with the Mayo Clinic.” So what are the songs students are listening to?
