Clown craze sweeping the country spreads to Bellingham

The source of childhood nightmares may be coming true as Halloween looms, with clowns recently being spotted in Bellingham.   Clowns have been sighted in at least 10 states over the past month, according to CNN. Western junior Jayme Gordon said she saw one in downtown on Wednesday, Oct. 5, around 5:30 p.m. Gordon feels the whole clown craze has gotten out of hand. “I was sitting at the Wild Buffalo on Wednesday night, and all of a sudden a clown walked by,” Gordon said. “I just want it to stop.” Gordon said the clown was holding an umbrella and had its face painted as she watched from a window. She said she was caught off guard and feels a little insecure with them running around town.

Bellingham Police Lieutenant Bob Vander Yacht said the police are aware of stories on social media sites regarding the clown issue, but said the community shouldn’t be concerned. “This all appears to be designed to create tension and fear,” Vander Yacht said in an email.  “Our hope for our community is that people will take the time to calmly consider the information that they are seeing on the internet and make rational decisions.” Bellingham Police have only had one report of clowns since Sept. 1.
