The Political Front: Debates on Red Square

The first presidential debate of this election cycle was recently held, and in my opinion, Clinton won. Trump seemed to have practiced, but in the end Clinton was the one better prepared to win the debate. The debate was held at Hofstra University, in Hempstead, NY, and was available for streaming online. Most of the news on the first presidential debate this past week has been focused on Donald Trump’s taxes, Hillary Clinton’s health and Alicia Machado, a former Miss Universe pageant winner. On Monday night’s debate Trump made a comment about how it was smart for him not to pay taxes. Experts think Trump did not help his campaign with this comment, since he has yet to release his tax information. At the debate he said he will release his taxes once Clinton releases her emails. To see the exact comment he made about how it was smart to not pay taxes, it is at the four minute mark.    The election has brought out a nasty side of people who support Clinton and Trump both. Despite this, Eric Bostrom, a preacher in Bellingham, maintains that Trump was the winner. He came to Western’s campus on Wednesday, Sept. 26 and stood in Red Square with a huge pro-Trump flag. The flag brought a tremendous amount of attention to Bostrom.

He said Trump’s best argument was that Clinton has been involved in fixing American for the past 30 years and she has done absolutely nothing. “Why should we vote for her now,” Bostrom said. “We need a change, Trump’s a change.” He then went on to talk about how Trump is the “real” hope and change, and not the “fake change” that Obama talked about. Alicia Machado, who, Machado claims, Trump has referred to as “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping,”  was a topic that came up at the debate. Machado was a former Miss Universe pageant winner who gained weight after being crowned. Bostrom had some comments about the fact that Trump has been called racist. He said that Trump is far from racist, and that he is just against illegal activity, which does not make him racist. “I would say Hillary and her buddies are more racist than he is,” Bostrom said. “The Democratic Party is the most racist party in history.” Clinton’s health was also a topic at the debate, during which Trump said she does not have the stamina nor the temperament to become president. Bostrom thinks Clinton is emotionally unstable, and also said she has major problems with her health. “She is highly drugged right now. In that debate, you can tell, and she is not a healthy person, and as he said, she does not have stamina,” Bostrom said. The next presidential debate will be on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
