Since the dawn of humankind, people have hunted for the best eat. In more recent years, a new option has entered the fray, one far more elusive than the average fast food stop or supermarket: the food truck.

For those who enjoy tasty food truck treats, the Food Truck Round Up is the place to be. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Civic Stadium, patrons will be presented with the unique opportunity to sample 26 different food trucks Bellingham has to offer.

Besides perusing the plethora of food options, entertainment comes in the form of a beer garden sponsored by Kulshan Brewing Co., a family area hosted by Nature’s Path Foods and music from local cover band SpaceBand, who has played the event for three years.  Although not everyone in attendance will be able to relax in the beer garden or color in the children’s area, there is still plenty to do, Industrial Credit Union Marketing Coordinator Amanda Ager said.

“The music will definitely be a lot of fun for students and just trying out all the food trucks – there’s not another avenue where you can have them all in one place,” Ager said.

Proceeds from the event go to the “Feed the Need” community food drive, which has provided support for Whatcom County food banks — and the families they serve — for 22 years.

Industrial Credit Union has been behind the event since the beginning, and the event continues to grow in size and caliber, Ager said. Beginning with only 10 trucks, 500 people and around $5,000 in proceeds during the first year, the event has grown to 26 trucks, 2,500 people and raised over $30,000.

“Four years ago, we were looking for ways to leverage our skills and figure out new ways to create excitement,” Ager said. “Just seeing food trucks gain popularity and there not being a food truck event … we saw an opportunity there.”

All food trucks donate a minimum of 10 percent of its profits from the day, with each $7 entry ticket and $4 beer ticket going entirely to the “Feed the Need” drive.

In order to make the whole donation process easier, guests will be required to pay for food using “truck bucks.” These can be purchased in increments of $1 and $5 during the event and may be redeemed at any food truck. Truck bucks can also be purchased in advance at any Industrial Credit Union branch or at either Kulshan Brewing Co. locations. Paying for truck bucks in advance is not required, but is recommended as it will help cut down on time spent waiting in line, Ager said.

If you’re having any doubts about the size of your appetite, or just simply want to see all that is offered without purchasing a buffet’s worth of food, Ager said customers should fear no longer.

“The food trucks can sell any of their menu options,” Ager said. “We ask them to include smaller portions too so you can try multiple food trucks.”

Rain or shine, Civic Stadium will be enveloped in countless aromas come Saturday. If you happen to pass by and overhear SpaceBand jamming out, feel free to swing by and give back to your community in one of the best ways possible: by eating delicious meals on wheels.
