By Alyssa Evans In a simulation, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by multiple aftershocks, led to a tsunami and took over the Northwest coast on Tuesday, June 7. Volunteer organizations and government agencies gathered to participate in a mock earthquake drill called Cascadia Rising in the early morning Tuesday. The drill will continue through the afternoon of Wednesday, June 8. “What we’re doing here is we’re testing our efficiency," said Jane Ringe, the Volunteer Center’s public information officer. “This is all just in case reality hits. Tomorrow, we’re all going to have the attitude of this has happened and we are here to help.” While Tuesday was the day of preparation as if a natural disaster has happened, Wednesday will be the time for participants to react and start getting involved in efforts to help areas in need. The Volunteer Center of Whatcom County is one of the organizations involved in Cascadia Rising. The center will be screening participants at 8:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. tomorrow at the Whatcom Unified Emergency Coordination Center, 3888 Sound Way. Through the screening, the center will gather a database of volunteers in case of an emergency based on skills and interests. A mock press conference will happen Wednesday, June 8, at 1:00 p.m. in front of City Hall. The conference is open to the public.
