Western is home to the Omega Beta chapter of the professional business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi. According to their website, AKP cultivates “principled business leaders” by focusing on five core values: brotherhood, knowledge, integrity, service, and unity. Members meet on a weekly basis and host events that focus on their own professional development as well as on community service.

Junior Harper Ellison, a member of AKP, explained that even though the fraternity is coed, all of its members are referred to as brothers. “It’s the same bond that you think of for any fraternity,” Ellison said. “We’re brothers, we’re in this together, we’re a part of this thing that’s bigger than us and that’s what connects us.”

Junior Jude Capili, also a member of AKP, said the club offers access to deep friendships with people who have similar mindsets and life goals. He said the Omega Beta chapter of AKP is like a family and willing to help its brothers out. The Omega Beta chapter of AKP has about 80 members.  Ellison said AKP is open to students of any major. Students who are interested in becoming members are taken through a six-week pledge process where they learn the history of the fraternity and the Omega Beta chapter, help put on events and conduct interviews with current brothers in order to get to to know each other. AKP puts on different events throughout the year that focus on community service, professional development, brotherhood, and fundraising. “The process itself really teaches you to buckle down, manage your time, put a lot of drive and effort into what you’re doing,” Ellison said. “A lot of brothers have become more disciplined since pledging and their grades have gone up.”

She also said that professional events are a big focus of the club. AKP recently co-sponsored an Amazon recruiting event with the Professional Women’s Association. Ellison said that a top recruiter from the company came to Western and talked to the two clubs about what they look for in potential candidates and what job opportunities were available at Amazon. “We all usually bring resumes to events like this and we give them to recruiters,” Ellison said. “Resume development is one of the big things that we do during the year. Not to toot our horn, but I think everybody in Alpha Kappa Psi has pretty impressive resumes.” Capili said one of his friends from AKP scored a job with Amazon because of a recruiting event the club held. The club also hosted a silent auction on March 18 at a winery in Woodinville, Washington. AKP wanted to split the proceeds with a charity, so they partnered with Rhythm Seattle, a nonprofit organization working to bring after school dance programs to at-risk schools. “I think joining Alpha Kappa Psi is the greatest thing I have done for myself since joining college,” Ellison said. “I really think it’s a fantastic opportunity. I would love to see more people pledge.” To learn more about Alpha Kappa Psi, visit their website at www.akpsiob.com or their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/akpsiob.
