TASTE TESTERS: STONES THROW BREWING

Western alumni and business partners Tony Luciano and Jack Pfleuger recently opened the doors to Stones Throw Brewery  after several months of anticipation. Located at 1009 Larrabee Ave., the brewery is the first of its kind in the Fairhaven area. Stones Throw was built using the property of an old Fairhaven house. Inside the once-garage now sits a den-like atmosphere for locals to come enjoy a beer after their latest adventure. While I was there, I had a flight with Flat Penny Pale Ale, the Blanchard ESB and Rambling Route Cider. The taster glasses are only $2 apiece, so I got this flight for $6. The Pale Ale had a strong, hoppy aftertaste I didn’t personally care for. The ESB was delicious and I would definitely consider coming back for more. Finally, the cider was wonderfully sweet after having the two taster beers.

Just like the beer, the taster tray my flight came in on was made onsite and looked stunning surrounding my drinks. For those looking for a non-alcoholic beverage, the brewery has a ginger ale, made in-house on tap that is sweet and full in flavor.     As far as food goes, there are two options. Behind the bar, there are pretzels and peanuts to snack on, but if you’re in the mood for something heartier, there’s the option of ordering Fairhaven Pizza for delivery to the bar. I decided to order pizza.

My pizza arrived in less than 20 minutes. Inside the brewery, there is a shelf set up with parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes and napkins already. The pizza was hot and tasted great with my beer. Luciano and Pfleuger’s efforts are certainly paying off. On Wednesday, April 13, the brewery had about 100 customers. Over the following weekend they went through eight kegs, Luciano said. “To have people being happy to give us money is a dream come true,” Luciano said. “We’ve been spending money left and right for two years. Now to have it come the other way is definitely a plus.” For Luciano, the brewery is a place for the community to gather. "[The other day] some neighbors in the high rise building across the street were going for a run; they do that a couple times a week. They saw the door open, stopped, went home, changed and came back." Luciano said. Luciano and Pfleuger have taken strides to make the brewery comfortable for everyone, including putting in a firepit where patrons can drink and chat, as well as gender-neutral bathrooms. Past the fire pit, there is a spot for viewing the brewing room. There’s roof access as well, which provides a nice view over Fairhaven. These spaces are accessible to patrons, but none of this is obvious from the bar. Stones Throw Brewery has a grand opening date set for Saturday, May 28, and is currently open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Overall, I would give Stones Throw Brewery an 8.5 out of 10. The atmosphere is comfortable and inclusive, the beer choices are great, but there's so much to see with very little direction of where to go.
