WOMEN OF WESTERN: AMY SCHUMER

Glamour magazine created an uproar with its “Chic At Any Size” special edition when it hit newsstands last month, offering 267 outfit ideas that flatter sizes 12 and up. This may not seem like a big deal, yet Amy Schumer, who is mentioned on the cover alongside Melissa McCarthy, Adele and Ashley Graham, was not asked permission to be included in the magazine.
In response to being in the magazine, Schumer said in an Instagram post that there is nothing wrong with being plus-size, but that she is a size six to eight and the magazine sends the wrong message to girls who have a similar body type to Schumer.
According to plusmodelmag.com the fashion industry defines plus-size as any woman over size 12.
“I love Glamour magazine, they have been so nice to me. They have done so many great things for women. But what I learned is that people really don’t like being classified as plus-size. We don’t need these labels. We don’t need ‘em,” Schumer said in an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
What message is Glamour sending to its audience by including Schumer on the cover? And more importantly why do we need to label any woman as plus-sized? Junior Rayme Rogge, a kinesiology major said magazines need to focus on more important issues like women’s equality instead of the appearance of women. “At a really young age girls start to look at their peers or themselves and start to categorize where they see their body,” Rogge said. “They have a really high risk of having low self esteem and [labeling] doesn’t really help.” The issue took to Twitter and Schumer received support from fans all over.
