Students respond to ESC proposal

Bruce Shepard sent out an email addressing the Ethnic Student Center and the lack of space for student who use it. A proposed solution would include a $20 million new building, which would in turn cost students $150 a year in student fees for the next 15 years.

How would you feel about being charged an additional $150 a year in student fees? I would feel fine being charged that amount personally but I know probably other people would not agree as much. How important do you feel the ethnic student center getting a new building is? I would think it’s pretty important, but again there’s going to be people who are going to disagree with that.

How would you feel about being charged an additional $150 a year in student fees? I think that there’s really no reason for students to have to pay more money for something that is actually a right of students of color to have, I think that should exist in and of itself. How important do you feel the ethnic student center getting a new building is? I think it’s extremely important that students of color and even students who are not of color, Caucasian students, are able to interact in a place like the Ethnic Student Center. I think that because the Ethnic Student Center has been an oppressed organization on this campus says a lot about how the school views it. I think that if it's out in the open it will become a non-stigmatized space that will hold more pride for students of color.

I feel like a whole new building might not necessarily be necessary, maybe if there was some way they could do an addition onto a building. How important do you feel the ethnic student center getting a new building is? I think with the amount of traffic that it sounds like they might be getting, it might be a good thing to get a bigger, more accommodating space.

How important do you feel the ethnic student center getting a new building is? I think it’s very important because it’s not very well-known right now so it needs to be recognized.

How would you feel about being charged an additional $150 a year in student fees? I think that’s a good idea, because I’ve been to the Ethnic Student Center a couple of times, it’s a room at the Viking Union. It’s really small, and it seems like we could do a lot more with that if there was a building. How important do you feel the ethnic student center getting a new building is? If it’s something that people use a lot, just like the gym or the library, these are things people use a lot, so if will be used and appreciated then I think it is important.

I just don’t know what the point of it would be. We have so many culture clubs already. I feel like it would bring more segregation.
