Get to know Western: Yule Ball Edition

More than 250 muggles gathered to celebrate their love of  the “Harry Potter” series at the annual Yule Ball,  hosted by the Harry Potter Club on Friday, Feb. 5.

The Yule Ball is a Harry Potter-themed dance put on by the club every year. The club does other events such as bake sales and a quarterly Tri-Wizard Tournament, but the Yule Ball is its most widely-known event. At the dance, there is a costume contest and a raffle. This year gave attendees the opportunity to win anything from hand-carved wooden wands to a 150 dollar gift card to Universal Studios Orlando to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

“We got money from [the Associated Students] this year, so we were able to afford better prizes and offer better accommodations for attendees,” said Katy Sharp, the president of Harry Potter Club. Sharp has gone to the Yule Ball three years in a row.

The ball had the typical things you’d find at a school dance including a disco ball, a photo booth and snacks, but the club members and ball attendees brought the magic and made it a unique experience with plenty of tributes to Harry Potter. Attendees dressed up in cloaks, Hogwarts school costumes, formal dresses and masks. The photo booth allowed attendees to get their pictures taken with props such as wands and even a life-sized photo of Robert Pattinson wearing a Hogwarts robe.

“You can just look around and see that everyone’s having a really fun time,” Sharp said. “It’s just fun to see all the people who love the club and love Harry Potter all being here.”
