The Front Book Club: Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

th“Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman,” by Jon Krakauer is, a stunning account of a remarkable young man's heroic life and death, according to the description from Amazon. This is this week’s student book recommendation, by senior Josh Kumar. He received this book as a Christmas gift from his mom, he said. This is a very different side of athletes, you get to see them not just as jocks or as popular people with bad personalities,Kumar said. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan, according to the book review on Amazon.   In the book, it explores how Tillman was killed by friendly fire and how the army and government tried

to cover it up, Kumar said. It was very eye opening to see an athlete playing the sport not for money but because he truly cared about the sport and giving it up for the country, Kumar said. According to a summary of the Krakauers novel, it took 5 weeks for his wife and the American public to learn the truth about his death. I think it is really cool and respectful that people are willing to drop these contracts and all that money and go fight in support of their country; for the freedom that we are given,Kumar said. Krakauer has written other stories of extraordinary young men; for example “Into the Wild” and “Into Thin Air.”   http://www.amazon.com/Where-Men-Win-Glory-Odyssey/dp/0385522266 https://www.bookbrowse.com/bb_briefs/detail/index.cfm/ezine_preview_number/4099/where-men-win-glory
