Western ranked third after strong fall showing

Following their fall season, Western Washington University Vikings ranks No. 3 in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup NCAA Division II standings.

The Director’s Cup is an award that honors institutions that achieve success in both men’s and women’s sports. The latest rankings were released in December, which marks the first one-third of the 2015-2016 season.

The Vikings achieved the third place ranking after their women’s soccer and volleyball teams both were able to advance to their respective tournaments Final Fours. Women’s Cross Country also contributed to the ranking by finishing 6th in the NCAA Div. II programs.

Currently, the Vikings trail Grand Valley State University and the Colorado School of Mines in the Division II standings. They do lead all of the 38 West Region teams at the Division II level.

Future rankings for the Director’s Cup will be in April after the Winter athletics season and will be finalized in June after Spring.

The Vikings have had 12 consecutive Top 50 finishes and have been among the Top 100 in 17 seasons as an NCAA II member.
