Western volleyball falls one game short of championship

Absolute heartbreak. The Western Washington University volleyball team fell to the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals on Friday , Dec. 11, in the Final Four of the Division II Women’s Volleyball Championship. At the Bob Martinez Athletics Center in Tampa, Florida the second-seeded Vikings dropped straight sets to the first-seed Wheeling Jesuit, 25-20, 25-19 and 27-25. This was a rematch from the Vikings’ opening game of this season, where it lost to the Hawks in both straight sets as well. Sophomore Joellee Buckner led the Vikings with 16 kills, and also chipped in 12 digs on defense. Freshman Abby Phelps led the Vikings with 17 digs, and senior Jennica McPherson added 10 kills and 17 digs. The Vikings finished the 2015 season with a record of 27-6, their best record since 2007 when they reached the national title game. Those 27 wins were the fifth most in school history.
