Former Western president and mathematics professor Albert “Al” Froderberg passed away at the age of 80. Froderberg died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 22 in his Bellingham home, according to the Bellingham Herald. A Seattle native, Froderberg received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Washington and began teaching at Western in 1968. He became the Chair of the Mathematics Department in 1972 until 1975, and again in 1982-1985. Froderberg served as President of the College Senate in 1980-1981 before joining President Robert G. Ross’ administration as the President’s Assistant for State Government Affairs in 1984. In this role, Froderberg was required to persuade the legislature in Olympia to support the financial needs of Western. In November 1987, Ross died in a plane crash along with two vice presidents. Froderberg served as Interim President after Ross’ death until September 1988 when Kenneth P. Mortimer stepped into his place. In 2000, Froderberg became the Director for Planned Giving for Western Foundation, a program established in 1966 to encourage private donations that provides about $15 million to Western annually. At the age of 74, Froderberg retired in 2009. No memorial or funeral service is planned for Froderberg, but people are asked to donate to the Albert J. Froderberg Memorial Scholarship Fund in his honor, according to the Bellingham Herald.
