With each entry of Get to Know Western, The Western Front will interview students and staff for a new insight on campus life. This week we interviewed Max Richter, 22, Senior from Tacoma, Wash. studying plastic engineering. Q: Why did you pick Western? A: I had a few good buddies living up here. We’re all into skiing and outdoor stuff. I just like being around people into the same stuff as me. Q: What is your favorite thing about Western? A: It’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere. People are friendly. [And there are] good academic programs for what I’m in. Q: What has been your favorite class so far? A: Either advanced composites or my senior project. They’re both directly related to my field of study. I get to build stuff and learn a lot while I’m doing it, so it’s pretty cool. [For the project,] I’m testing repairs on wind turbine blades — fatigue testing to be specific. There’s a lot of different testing you can do. Q: What do you like to do around Bellingham? A: I like to bike and snowboard, hang with buddies, and check out all the different restaurants we have here. Q: What is your best piece of advice for students? A: Find the people who are into what you’re doing because they’re going to keep you motivated and you’re just going to like being around them. You’re going to be able to grow as a person more. Q: What are you excited about in your department? A: I like all the projects that are going on right now. There’s a pretty wide range of stuff to observe and learn from. And not all of us have the time to sit there and watch people work on their projects, so when we’re able to come together and listen to what people are doing, it’s pretty cool. It motivates me to get my stuff done and it’s just interesting because it applies to all of us and everything we’re learning.   Q: What else are you interested in? A: [I’ve been fishing] my whole life. There’s a lot of fishing that people don’t realize [is available]. And I feel like that’s a good activity that people don’t utilize around here. I was new to it up here this summer and if you get out there and do it, you can reap the rewards pretty easily.
