This film was particularly hard to rate because it seems to be a “love it or hate it” type of performance. The movie, The Kids are All Right, takes viewers into the home of a modern American family and into the hearts of each member of the unconventional relationships within it. The lesbian mothers start the movie off with a twist and it only gets more unconventional as the sperm-donor father steps in to the picture and confused feelings begin for the Mothers and the children. There were many belly-laugh inducing parts of this movie. There’s a comedic take on even some of the most emotionally charged scenes. However, it was also very raunchy. The “R” rating should be taken seriously as scenes are explicit and the language is vivid. The Kids are All Right is a surprising film with equal parts of drama and laughter. It’s the perfect movie to watch with roommates who can appreciate the indie vibe of the film and to giggle away any awkwardness some of the more shocking scenes. Rating: 6.5/10
