Vanessa Maisonpierre is a 22 year old senior majoring in Spanish and philosophy, political science and economics (PPE), from Seattle, WA. Q: Why did you pick Western? A: I transferred here from Washington State University halfway through my sophomore year. I came here because my sister went here and I was a philosophy major, and I found out Western had PPE, which I had never heard of before. So I liked that a lot. Q: What is your favorite thing about Western? A: Probably the people. There are so many different types of people here and everyone’s really accepting of everyone else and you can literally wear whatever you want and act however you want, so it’s nice. Q: What has been your favorite class so far? A: Well I studied abroad, I don’t know if that could count as my favorite class. But, that probably. Q: Where did you go to study abroad? A: Granada in southern Spain. I was there for six and a half months and then I traveled for two by myself. That’s why I’m a fifth year senior. Q: What do you like to do around Bellingham? A: Well I’m president of an honors society, so through that we get really involved in the community and do canned food drives and volunteer at local schools and stuff, so that takes up most of my time. But I really like that because we can choose how we want to make a difference in the community. Q: What is your best piece of advice for students? A: I think school is really important, but grades are not as important. I mean, I’m president of an honors society, so obviously I think grades are really important. But rather than stressing out about getting the 4.0, just making sure you’re learning the work in a way you can apply to real life because a lot of it seems like you can’t, but you totally can if you try. Q: How did you become involved in your honor society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars? A: You get sent a letter of invitation when you’re a freshman or a sophomore based on GPA, I think it’s 3.5 or higher. I got involved at WSU, and transferred here and became a lot more involved and just stuck with it. This is my second year being president and my third year being an officer. Q: Why are you handing out ghosts made from lollipops today? A: We like to do little things around campus, like we’ve done bake sales and whatnot, so it’s a nice way to get our name out there. And at the very least this reminds me of elementary school, and I really liked doing it in elementary school so I was like, ‘Well, it’s midterm week this would be a good week to just throw it back to when school was easy’.
