Get to Know Western: Emilio Luzuriaga

Q: Why did you choose Western?

A: I wanted to be somewhere close enough that I could still visit my family, but far away enough that I could start building my own life. So, being two hours away from mom is comfortable, but at the same time I now have responsibilities.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Western?

NOT-JACK-WATERMARK-202x300
Junior and Japanese major, Emilio Luzuriaga

A: The people. Everyone here is super nice.

Q: What has been your favorite class so far?

A: The Japanese classes in general. Although honorable mention, East Asian History with Thompson.

Q: What do you like to do around Bellingham?

A: I don’t have that much free time because of work, but I like hanging out with friends. Eating out is good too.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for other students?

A: Relax. Have fun. And make sure you’re studying something you really enjoy doing more than something you think is practical or that people pressure you into doing.

Q: What did you choose Japanese?

A: I was actually born in South America and my dad was always obsessed with the United States and my mom was always obsessed with Europe, so I guess I disappointed both of them by being really obsessed with Asia. There’s also the TESOL program, which aims to be able to help foreigners learn English, and I really like the idea of being able to help people.
