Women of Western: Planned Parenthood

I understand that this whole Planned Parenthood fetus video controversy has been a little shocking, but it wasn’t even real! Anti-abortion groups are working really hard to turn everyone against Planned Parenthood by making fake videos and it’s still not working, people are onto them. Men are still trying to control women’s bodies and it’s pretty irritating. This battle that women have been fighting has been going on for way too long. Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 6.44.14 PM Though it frustrates me that the government still has so much control over women’s bodies and decisions surrounding it, the real issue is that certain politicians have plans to defund Planned Parenthood. Yes, there are other places and clinics that women can access for reproductive care, but Planned Parenthood is the strongest national organization with the most money to provide this care for women. Whether these women are in low-income situations, they do not have health insurance or simply don’t want to use it for whatever reason; Planned Parenthood remains their only option. Here’s a LIST of things PP has done that have nothing to do with abortions (data found on their 2013-2014 annual report):

  • [caption id="attachment_3424" align="alignleft" width="456"]Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 7.18.45 PM Breakdown of medical services provided by Planned Parenthood in 2013 from their 2013-2014 annual report. [/caption] PP increased use of IUDs and implants by 91 percent.
  • PP provided 865,721 pap tests and breast exams, leading to early detection of cancer in 87,988 of these women.
  • PP educated women on their right to healthcare under the Affordable Healthcare Act and helped them gain access to it.
  • 4,470,597 tests and treatment for STI’s were provided by PP.
Yes, they provide abortion and I’m sorry if your religious or personal views disagree with that, but that doesn’t give you the right to deny someone healthcare and support defunding Planned Parenthood. Too many women need its services and you don’t have the right to tell a woman what she can or can’t do with her body. If you personally don’t believe in abortion, don’t get one, but don’t you dare try to control what another woman chooses to do. If you are a man, you respect a woman’s choice regarding her body and you do not pressure her to keep a baby or terminate it and you certainly do not try to control her right to any type of reproductive healthcare.   Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 6.52.47 PM
