Katy Sharp, graphic design major, sophomore, 20

Q: Why did you pick Western?

AWestern was one of the few schools in Washington that has a design program, like an actual program specifically for graphic design. A lot of places have applied visual arts or something similar but this was one of the few that have a good program.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Western?

A: That’s really hard. I really like that I can walk across campus in 20 minutes, the entirety of campus. I’ve visited friends at University of Washington, and there’s like all the little different campuses for all the little different things and you can get lost so easily. Here you can experience everything.

Q: What has been your favorite class so far?

A: I would have to say my design 260 class, which was 3D design. I learned box making and book making. It was a lot of hands on things and I really enjoyed it.

Q: What do you like to do in Bellingham?

A: Recently, I’ve gone to a lot of parks and done little hikes and just experienced the different parks around which I think is really enjoyable when it’s nice out.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for students?

A: You know, it sounds cliché, but I would say don’t skip class. I’ve personally have only skipped class a couple of times for necessary reasons. I’ve had some experiences with classes where the majority of people skipped and because of that the professor would go over homework in class or give a final question in class. It’s so much more helpful and you get so much more done. A lot of people that I have talked to said their grades are so much better when they consistently go to class.”

Q: It’s getting closer to finals week. Where is your favorite place to study to get away from all the noise?

A: I guess it depends on what I’m studying. For design things, I go to the Mac lab in the library. Surprisingly, not as many people go there, as you would think. For other things, I’ve been to the library a few times in that area by Zoe’s Bookside Bagels with the chairs. That’s one place. There’s this study dungeon, that’s what my friend calls it. It’s this weird little room, just one door, no windows and it’s 5-by-5 feet with a table and a chair in the top floor of Buchanan Towers, where I live. You just go in there and plug in your computer and shut the door. Surprisingly, it’s really useful.

Q:What’s your favorite book that you've read so far this year?

A:I’ve started to read the “Outlander” series, so I’ll just say the first “Outlander” book. I really like historical fiction.

Q: What got you interested in historical fiction?

A: When I was a kid I did not like reading fiction, aside from the Harry Potter books, which has been a life-long love of mine, I did not like reading fantasy books or realistic fiction books. Fiction books really bored me. I was really into the nonfiction section, so reading historical fiction novels was a good transition, but even to this day I can’t read young adult fiction, even young adult historical fiction. It’s structured so differently that it just really bothers me.
